Blessed with an achingly distinct voice, Jadea Kelly bridges the lilting country tinges of Iris DeMent with the darker influences of Portishead’s synth and organ pads. Her 2010 recording Eastbound Platform earned a CFMA (Canadian Folk Music Award) nomination for Emerging Artist of the Year and she was later featured on CBC as part of Vinyl Café with Stuart McLean. She was also recorded live by CBC at the 2010 Stuart Park Festival.
Jadea works most prominently in the studio recording with the likes of Catherine MacLellan (Silhouette, 2010) and even international metal band Protest The Hero (Kezia, 2005 and Scurrilous, 2011). Alongside guest appearances with both projects, Jadea tours her own music internationally opening for the likes of Old Man Luedecke and Melissa McClelland.
Her sophomore release Clover — recorded at Woodshed Studios in Toronto and produced by Stew Crookes (Hawksley Workman) — represents a drastic departure and shift in Jadea’s artistic practice. Experimenting with darker undertones and driven soundscapes,
Clover’s inspirations are orchestrated and percussion based.
