While orders placed this week will not arrive before Christmas, but that doesn't mean it's too late to give the gift of music this season — our staff recently picked their favourite releases as our biggest and brightest:

True North Records

The High Bar Gang, Lost and Undone: A Gospel Bluegrass Companion — On their debut True North album the band focuses on the fine gospel music made popular by the likes of Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers.

Various Artists, Snowbird: The Songs of Gene MacLellan — Nearly two decades after his death, many musicians he influenced gathered to celebrate the songs he left etched onto their hearts and recorded a tribute to Gene MacLellan, including a stunning version of "Won't Talk About Love" performed by his daughter Catherine.

Old Man Luedecke, Tender Is The Night — With skillful precision and a storyteller's heart, Luedecke's narrative–driven folk songs are playful, coy, and soul–warming.

Ruth Moody, These Wilder Things — JUNO Award–winning songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba and founding member of the internationally renowned, Billboard–charting trio The Wailin' Jennys.

Linus Entertainment

Downchild, Can You Hear The Music — The album starts the way all things Downchild should: with the jump blues sound that makes you want to jump up and dance.

Divergent Recordings

Jadea Kelly, Clover — Built with heavy orchestration, darker organ pads, layered harmonies and sonic space, Clover presents a startlingly drastic yet unified musical shift for Kelly in 2013, a unique union of Iris De Ment's vocal ache with heavy Portishead ambience and percussion.

Little Suns, Normal Human Feelings — The band draws influences from folk music from every corner of the world as they combine clarinet, bass, the bouzouki, sax, uilleann pipes and more on Normal Human Feelings.

Reissues of the Year

Chilliwack — The legendary Canadian rock band best remembered for their biggest hits "My Girl (Gone Gone Gone)", "I Believe", "Whatcha Gonna Do (When I'm Gone)", "Fly At Night", "Lonesome Mary" and "Communication Breakdown". Three classic Chilliwack Mushroom Records albums were reissued, re–mastered with bonus tracks, new liner notes and photographs by bandleader Bill Henderson.

Doucette — One of the biggest rock radio hits of the late 1970's in Canada was "Mama Let Him Play" by Vancouver rocker Doucette. Two lost Doucette albums have been re-mastered in 24 bit audio from the original master analog tapes, with previously unreleased bonus tracks, new liner notes and photographs from the era.

Thanks for another great year with us! Enjoy, and keep an ear out for more to come in the New Year!
