- 1. Big Eye Little Eye
- And in this corner, the wonderful underdog of revitalized grit-rock, Toronto’s Golden Dogs!
This band outsoars Jet, outpaces The Strokes and swings better than The Vines, but nobody takes notice for all of the idiotic reasons that keep the record industry floundering like a fish outta water in ’06. Commercial radio should be ashamed for playing the lame U2/Green Day Saints cover while ignoring the Golden Dogs’ exuberant reworking of Wings’ Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five. Other standouts include the pounding Run Outta Luck, the flamboyant Saints at the Gates and the pure pop sounds of Strong and Never Meant Any Harm. Dave Azzolini and Jessica Grassia create otherworldly wailing vocal harmonies in songs that bring forward all the right nuances of ’60s and ’70s power pop without sounding nostalgic.
