Welcome to our website! True North Records is Canada's oldest independent record label and one of its largest.
Founded in 1969 and with over 450 releases, 40 JUNO Awards and 37 gold and platinum records to its credit, True North is a unique Canadian recording company dedicated to fostering creativity among its artists.
True North boasts a diverse catalogue of recordings by such outstanding Canadian artists as Bruce Cockburn, the Golden Dogs, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden, Tom Wilson, 54-40, Joel Kroeker, Lynn Miles, Hunter Valentine, Rheostatics, Howie Beck, Murray McLauchlan, Lighthouse, Rough Trade, Randy Bachman, NOJO and Michael Occhipinti.
True North also distributes recordings by such artists as Echo & The Bunnymen, the Buzzcocks, Richard Thompson, Kelly Joe Phelps, the Audreys, Cracker, the Church, Cowboy Junkies, Lenny Breau, The Guess Who, Hayseed Dixie, Janis Ian, Northey/Valenzuela, Martyn Joseph, Paul Kelly, the Oysterband, Double Trouble and many more through various licensing ventures.
True North is distributed in Canada by Universal Music; Rounder Records in the United States; Planet in Australia and New Zealand; IRD in Italy; GO! Entertainment in Holland, Belgium and Luxemburg; Alive AG in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland; Rootsy Music in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway; and Essential Music in the UK.
In Canada, True North distributes the following labels: Cooking Vinyl, Fuel 2000, SCI Fidelity and Signature Sounds.
The label was founded over 35 years ago by Bernie Finkelstein; one of the leading figures in the Canadian music industry.
True North Records is home to The Finkelstein Management Company Limited and its roster of acts. Mr. Finkelstein began his career managing two of Canada's earliest internationally known groups, The Paupers and Kensington Market. Later he handled management for Murray McLauchlan, Dan Hill and Barney Bentall. Currently one of Canada's top talent managers, Finkelstein works with Bruce Cockburn, Stephen Fearing, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings; and with Graham Stairs - The Golden Dogs & Hunter Valentine.
True North Records is also the home of the True North Publishing Group which has extensive interests in music publishing and oversees a rich catalogue of works by writers including Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan, Barney Bentall, Rough Trade, The Golden Dogs & Hunter Valentine. Other copyrights include various film and television soundtracks (Going Down The Road, Waterwalker, Franklin...) and covers by artists as diverse as Anne Murray, The Barenaked Ladies, Jerry Garcia, The Rankins, Maria Muldaur, Jimmy Buffett, Dan Fogelberg and The Barra MacNeils, among others.
